I’m the Director and Licensee at Seacrest Wolf Preserve a 501(c)3 non profit located in Chipley Florida. During the early morning of 1/9/24 in some of the roughest weather in our area post Hurricane Michael, a very large tree crashed down into our fences. Once we were certain all the animals were safe and contained- we had to figure out a solution to our fence problem. The solution was Bomann Fencing!!!!...

The most effective type of fencing for cattle often depends on the specific needs of the herd and pasture. Barbed wire and electric fencing are commonly used because they are cost-effective and provide a strong barrier. Barbed wire deters cattle from pushing against the fence, while electric fencing offers a psychological barrier that teaches cattle to stay away after their initial contact.
A fence designed to contain cattle should be at least 54 inches (about 4.5 feet) tall. This height helps prevent the cattle from jumping over or leaning over the fence. For bulls or more aggressive cattle, fences may need to be even taller and sturdier to ensure containment.
Barbed wire is suitable for most cattle; however, it may not be the best choice for breeds with longer coats or for calves, as they can get tangled and injured. For these types of cattle, smoother wire options such as high-tensile wire or electric fencing may be safer and more effective. Additionally, in areas where cattle are frequently handled or moved, a combination of solid barriers (like wooden fences) and barbed wire might be preferred for added safety and ease of handling.
Regular maintenance of cattle fencing is crucial to ensure its effectiveness and longevity. This includes checking for and repairing any broken wires or posts, ensuring that electric fences are functioning correctly with a live current, and keeping the fence line clear of overgrown vegetation that can ground electric currents or damage physical structures. Periodic tightening of wires and stability checks on posts, especially after extreme weather conditions, are also important to maintain the structural integrity of the fence.
